The chewing surfaces of your child's rear teeth are the most likely places for a cavity to form. You will sense why when you run your tongue over this region of your mouth: Unlike the rest of your teeth, their surfaces are not smooth. Rather, they are packed with microscopic striations known as "pits and fissures," which hold food particles and germs. Sometimes these tiny, damp cracks are too small for a toothbrush's bristles to fully enter. Tooth decay finds the ideal conditions as a result. Although a sealant doesn't "count" as having a cavity filled, please tell your youngster that it can be thought of as a miniature plastic filling.
